Walk On! Philadelphia Conducts Walkable Surveys In Some Of The City's Most Populated Areas
AARP and the Mayor's Commission on Aging have launched a volunteer community street survey called Walk On! Philadelphia, to shed light on the challenges older pedestrians face on many Philadelphia area streets. Walking safely in neighborhoods and on local streets throughout the City of Philadelphia is critical to maintaining mobility, livability and independence.
"Philadelphia has a growing 50 and older population," said Mayor Michael A. Nutter. "It is essential for our Administration to utilize innovative approaches, like AARP's Walkability Study, to assist older Philadelphians navigate daily obstacles."
Of the 10 largest cities in the United States, Philadelphia has the largest proportion of people 60 years and older. Mayor Nutter and City Councilman Curtis Jones will join AARP walkability teams to conduct surveys throughout the City. "We must be proactive in Philadelphia to retain and attract residents of all ages, especially those among our older population of the city," says City Councilman Curtis Jones. Safe sidewalks and intersections are critically important to more livable communities and AARP is committed to ensuring that Americans, ages 50 and older, are able to sustain mobility as they age.
WHAT:
AARP volunteer teams will visit designated intersections within city limits where they will evaluate crosswalks for pedestrian safety and accessibility using a "walkability" survey developed by the AARP Public Policy Institute.
