COLUMBIA, S.C., Feb. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia's Hammond School today announced its 2012-2013 initiative to incorporate iPads in the classroom for each enrolled student, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. This effort further demonstrates the Hammond School's commitment to excellence and innovation in education and the administration's dedication to further empowering Hammond students by giving them immediate access to cutting-edge technology.
"At the heart of the Hammond experience is our teachers working alongside our students learning and exploring together in an environment that fosters the development of curious, lifelong learners," said Hammond School Headmaster, Chris Angel. "The introduction of new technology will further enhance inspirational teaching."
For Angel, the addition of iPads in the classroom is a no-brainer. Traditional textbooks, he said were too cumbersome, expensive and much of the information outdated. Digital textbooks allow for immediate updates, giving students and faculty access to the most current information available as well as interactive learning experiences.
The cost of each iPad will be included in the tuition, and students will be expected to take their iPads home each night and return to school with them charged each day. Lower school students will use their iPads during the school day while in class. The school will provide all needed applications as requested by teachers and departments, but encourages students to explore other available apps. The school will also provide student and parent training sessions at the beginning of the school year.
"This is the future of education," said Angel. "I really think this is an opportunity for the entire Hammond community to come together and be proud that we are at the forefront of this educational initiative. This is a monumental paradigm shift in education, and we are right there on the edge, leading the charge into the twenty-first century."
