TAIPEI (AFX) - The government may allow the Taiwan dollar and Chinese yuan to be exchanged in international airports and harbors on the main island before extending this arrangement to Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung, Taiwan's three largest cities, the United Daily News reported, citing an unidentified cabinet official.
The newspaper said the exchange expansion plan could begin early next year.
Transactions will be limited to 20,000 yuan per person per day, it said.
Earlier this month, Taiwan allowed such currency exchange for the first time on Kinmen and Matsu, two fortified islets just off China's southeastern Fujian province.
One yuan is currently converted for around 4.1619-4.1893 twd.
The Mainland Affairs Council, the cabinet unit in charge of affairs across the Taiwan Strait, has declined to comment on the report.
