High-Performance Devices Deliver Triple-Play Quality-of-Service with Significantly Better Performance than General-Purpose Processors, Plus Best-in-Class Power Efficiency
Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:MSPD), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, has concluded three days of demonstrations at the Broadband World Forum in Paris, France, that showcased the company’s Comcerto processor families. In particular, the Comcerto 1000 family demonstration included its ability to deliver triple-play services consisting of multiple simultaneous video streams, plus Voice-over-IP (VoIP) and full-duplex gigabit NAT routing, with no degradation in voice or video quality.
Mindspeed has been demonstrating both its Comcerto 1000 M83263 and Comcerto 300 M82359 processors at this week’s Broadband World Forum. The low-power Comcerto 1000 single- and dual-core packet processors are targeted at service provider triple-play broadband home gateways, small- and medium-sized business (SMB) smart security appliances, wireless enterprise access points (EAPs), and VoIP products. In addition to showcasing the Comcerto 1000’s triple-play QoS performance this week, Mindspeed also has been highlighting how the device will enable telephone companies to deploy future “runtime” services using the open services gateway initiative (OSGi)/Java framework.
Mindspeed’s Comcerto 300 Series demonstrations this week have focused on support for wideband voice (G.722) over analog POTS copper loops, enabling delivery of high-definition voice for Next Generation Network FTTx deployments using inexpensive analog phone sets. The Comcerto 300 device combines a dual-core ARM + digital signal processor (DSP) architecture with a rich set of features and interfaces, including dual Gigabit Ethernet serdes/SGMII. Combined with Mindspeed’s carrier-grade Media Stream software, the Comcerto 300 provides a complete, integrated solution for VoIP media, signaling and control processing between narrowband time division multiplex (TDM) and Ethernet. It can be used to build inexpensive POTS termination systems that leverage Ethernet-based access equipment architectures in next-generation network (NGN) POTS/ISDN line cards focused on class 5 replacement, fiber to the premises (FTTP) multi-dwelling unit (MDU), and IP-Private Branch Exchange (IP-PBX) applications.
