Safeway Inc. (NYSE:SWY) today announced the appointment
of John A. Lewis as Senior Vice President, Internal Audit, a new
position. He will have overall responsibility for the company's
internal audit function, reporting to Executive Vice President and
Chief Financial Officer, Robert Edwards.
Lewis joins Safeway from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. where he was Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Wal-Mart International since 2003, and prior to that served as Vice President and Chief Audit Executive at Wal-Mart since 1996.
"John's extensive retail and audit experience will be a great asset to Safeway in the years to come," said Steve Burd, Chairman, President and CEO. "We are pleased to be able to attract someone of his caliber to lead our audit function."
Before joining Wal-Mart, Lewis spent 25 years as an auditor with Mercantile Stores Company, Inc. and became the company's Director of Internal Audit. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a BBA in Accounting, and earned his CPA in Colorado and Ohio. He is also a Certified Internal Auditor.
