CINCINNATI (AFX) - Media company E.W. Scripps Co. said Wednesday May revenue rose at its network and broadcast units but declined at its newspaper division.
Scripps cable and satellite networks, including the Food Network, DIY Network and Great American Country, reported a 15 percent increase in revenue to $97.3 million compared with a year ago, as advertising revenue climbed 12 percent and affiliate fee revenue rose 23 percent.
Revenue for its broadcast television unit, which includes six ABC affiliates, gained 9.5 percent to $31.7 million, with sales at local stations up 9.8 percent to $20.4 million.
The newspaper unit, which includes daily and community newspapers in 18 markets, saw revenue drop 2.8 percent to $59.6 million, with advertising income slipping 1.4 percent. Results were hurt by having one less Sunday in the month, the company stated. National newspaper ad sales took the biggest hit, sliding 12 percent to $3.1 million.
Scripps does not report monthly revenue for its interactive media division, including the Shopzilla and uSwitch online search and price comparison Web sites, for competitive reasons.
