Health Net Federal Services (HNFS), the government
operations division of Health Net, Inc. (NYSE:HNT), is proud to be a
National Sponsor of the 26th National Veterans Wheelchair Games to be
held in Anchorage, Alaska, July 3-8, 2006. The event attracts more
than 600 wheelchair athletes who are military veterans from across the
country, Puerto Rico and Great Britain. The Games are co-presented by
the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Paralyzed Veterans of
America (PVA).
"Health Net is honored, proud and privileged to be a National Sponsor for the 26th National Veterans Wheelchair Games. We are committed to supporting these sports programs as part of our mission in serving military beneficiaries, both active duty and retirees," commented Steve Tough, president, HNFS. "What a privilege to be able to honor veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and their service to our nation. Their spirit, determination and athleticism are inspiring!"
The National Veterans Wheelchair Games is a multi-event sports and rehabilitation program for military service veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, amputations or certain neurological problems. While past Wheelchair Games have produced a number of national and world-class champions, the Games also provide opportunities for newly disabled veterans to gain sports skills and exposure to other wheelchair athletes. Health Net also is contributing to the PVA Rehabilitation Fund, which sponsors 28 recently disabled veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan to participate in the Wheelchair Games. Two of these athletes will be sponsored directly from Health Net's contributions to the fund.
Competitive events at the Wheelchair Games include swimming, table tennis, weight-lifting, archery, air guns, basketball, softball, quad rugby, bowling, hand-cycling, wheelchair slalom, power soccer, a motorized wheelchair rally, and track and field. Athletes compete in all events against others with similar athletic ability, competitive experience or age.
Admission to the 2006 National Veterans Wheelchair Games event is free and is open to the public. For more information, go to www.wheelchairgamesanchorage.net.
