Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c43328) has announced the addition of the latest report from Espicom Business Intelligence "Merck & Co Pharmaceutical Company Intelligence Report" to their offering.
Established in 1891, Merck & Co discovers, develops, manufactures and markets vaccines and pharmaceutical medicines to address unmet medical needs. The company operates on a global basis and is represented in more than 200 countries. Merck's headquarters are based in Whitehouse Station, NJ.
Current Growth Drivers
Merck currently markets six blockbuster products with sales in excess of US$1 billion, however, due to patent expiries and increasing competition in certain markets, only four of these will form the basis of future sales growth:
Cozaar (losartan potassium) was the first angiotensin-II receptor antagonist selective for AT1 receptors to be developed for the treatment of hypertension. It was jointly developed with DuPont Merck (now Bristol-Myers Squibb), as was Hyzaar, a combination of Cozaar and hydrochlorothiazide.
Zetia/Ezetrol (ezetimibe), a cholesterol absorption inhibitor, was developed by the Merck/Schering-Plough joint venture and is indicated for the treatment of hypercholesterolaemia.
Vytorin/Inegy (ezetimibe+simvastatin) is a fixed-combination tablet that offers a novel approach to cholesterol management. It was jointly developed and launched by the Merck/Schering-Plough joint venture.
Singulair (montelukast) is a once-daily, long-acting oral leukotriene D4-receptor antagonist indicated for the treatment of asthma.
Cancidas (caspofungin acetate) is a water-soluble semi-synthetic agent derived from a fermentation product discovered at Merck's laboratories in Madrid. It acts by inhibiting glucan synthase, the enzyme responsible for maintaining the fungal cell wall and is thus fungicidal against a broad range of pathogens including those that have become resistant to currently-used antifungal drugs.
