MOSCOW (Thomson Financial) - Gazprom said its CEO Alexei Miller has met Greek prime minister Costas Karamanlis during a visit to Greece and discussed extending Gazprom's gas supply to Greece until 2040 and expanding the amount it delivers.
The existing contract began in 1987 and runs until 2016 with an extension option. Last year, Gazprom supplied about 1.74 bln cubic metres.
Gazprom cited Greek development minister Dimitris Sioufas as saying this only covered 80 pct of Greece's needs, and that consumption there is set to rise to 6.5 bln cubic metres in 2010.
Miller and Karamanlis are also in discussion over the opportunities that might be open to Gazprom as the Greek energy market is deregulated, and issues concerning the Burgas-Alexandoupolis pipeline.
