TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - Japan's Nissan Motor Co said Tuesday it plans to introduce its main brand in South Korea next year following the successful launch of its Infiniti luxury marque two years ago.
Nissan will introduce the crossover Rogue, the mid-size Murano sport utility vehicle and the Altima sedan in 2008, the automaker said in a statement.
'Infiniti has performed extremely well in the Korean market, rapidly becoming one of the leading luxury brands,' said Nissan Motor senior vice president Colin Dodge.
'With growing demand for import cars, it is the optimal time to introduce the (mainstay) Nissan brand,' he added.
The company plans to set up a dedicated dealer network in South Korea for the Nissan brand.
Nissan, which was overtaken by Honda in 2006 as Japan's second-largest automaker, continues to struggle, particularly in its home market, after its first drop in annual profits under its one-time saviour Carlos Ghosn last year.
