NEW YORK (AP) - Engineering and construction company Fluor Corp. said Wednesday it signed an approximately $1.8 billion contract to design and build what it says will be the world's largest offshore wind farm, for Scottish and Southern Energy.
The wind farm, which will be off the Suffolk coast of the United Kingdom, will provide carbon neutral, renewable electricity for more than 415,000 homes. It will contain 140 wind turbines from Siemens Wind Power A/S, which Fluor will be responsible for installing.
The Greater Gabbard Offshore wind farm project was a joint venture between Fluor International Ltd. and Airtricity, with Fluor selling its 50 percent stake to Scottish and Southern Energy for about $80 million.
The wind farm is expected to be completed in 2011.
