MOSCOW (Thomson Financial) - The Georgian military offensive against the breakaway region of South Ossetia overnight has caused 'deaths and many wounded,' the rebels' representative in Moscow told the Interfax news agency on Friday.
'I have just talked with the (South Ossetian) military authorities,' said Dmitry Medoyev. 'According to them there are deaths and many wounded after massive Georgian firing on the capital Tskhinvali.'
Fifteen civilians have been killed by Georgian firing on Tshkinvali, according to a South Ossetian law enforcement official cited by the Interfax news agency.
Georgian authorities earlier confirmed that an attack was underway against the region which broke away from Tbilisi in the early 1990s. tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomsonreuters.com afp/jfr COPYRIGHT Copyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2008.
