An organization of military veterans that primarily supports community organizations will aid in the Hurricane Ike relief effort in Southeastern Texas.
While the damage from Hurricane Ike is still being assessed, help from Allied Veterans of the World Inc. & Affiliates is already on the way. Allied Veterans are joining forces with Winn-Dixie to assist relief efforts by sending 225,000 half-liter bottles of water to certain towns without functional water purification centers due to damage from Hurricane Ike.
"We're committed to helping these devastated communities in any way we can," said National Commander Johnny Duncan. "While we primarily donate to veteran and first responder organizations, we know these people are going through a rough time right now and we hope to provide necessities to aid the recovery effort."
The approximately 250,000 half-liter bottles of water will be loaded in five tractor trailers with each trailer carrying roughly 1,800 cases. This relief effort will provide the towns of Galveston, Alvin, Surfside, Angleton and Freeport with a large amount of immediately drinkable water for the challenging cleanup.
Allied Veterans of the World, Inc. & Affiliates prides itself on being veterans helping veterans. The organization raises funds through bingo, car washes, cookouts and cyber centers. All funds directly benefit veteran or first responder organizations.
Allied Veterans of the World, Inc. & Affiliates was founded in 1979 as the 451st Bomber Group by Commander-in-Chief Harold Grossman. Grossman began meeting with friends from his military unit and they decided to become the first organized veteran group in Florida by incorporating under the official name of Bomber Group 451st, Inc.
Throughout the next ten years the group donated various items to the VA domiciliary. They aided senior citizens in the area and provided transportation for veterans to the VA hospital who didn't have the means. The group gathered funds through bingo along with member contributions.
Members of the group realized they could make a much larger impact on the veteran community if they opened their organization to all veterans. In 1989, Allied Veterans of the World, Inc. was born. For more information, visit www.AlliedVeteransInc.com.
