Schuff Steel Midwest, part of Schuff International, Inc. (OTC: SHFK), a family of leading steel fabrication and erection companies, received a contract to fabricate and erect steel for the University of Kentucky’s Patient Care Facility in Lexington, Kentucky.
Schuff is currently fabricating 4,800 tons of structural steel in its Ottawa, Kansas, steel plant for the 1,200,000 square feet structure—612,000 square feet of which is structural steel. When complete, the health care facility will provide state-of-the-art emergency and interventional care, imaging and surgery and two towers of private patient rooms. Schuff is on schedule to start erecting the facility in the second quarter of 2009. Turner Construction Company, the construction manager on the project, awarded Schuff the contract.
Schuff Steel Midwest also reached a major construction milestone this month as it started erecting 4,400 tons of structural steel for the new headquarters of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) in Fort Meade, Maryland. Schuff has been working on the project in a design-assist capacity with Hensel Phelps Construction Co., the general contractor on the project, since March 2008. Schuff fabricated the steel at its Ottawa, Kansas, steel plant.
When completed in February 2011, DISA will total over 1,000,000 square feet of office space in five buildings.
According to Scott Schuff, president and CEO of Schuff International, Inc., “Both projects benefited greatly from Schuff’s design-assist capabilities. Schuff has one of the most comprehensive design-build/design-assist departments in the industry. Our expertise and resources allow us to work with contractors and structural engineers in the preconstruction phase of a project to ensure the best possible value and completion date.”
