Dow Coating Materials, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW) dedicated to innovation in the paint and coatings industry, presented a paper entitled “Advances in Waterborne, Acrylic Metal Protection Paints and Associated Testing Procedures” at EUROCORR 2009, in Nice, France from 6-10 September 2009.
Dr. Andrew Trapani presented the paper, which focused on new advances that allow lower VOC levels in metal protection paints without sacrificing quality. Data for the presentation comes from Dow’s work with AVANSE™ Acrylic Resin technology. This new technology enables production of binders that encapsulate pigments and other minerals in a paint formulation. The pigment-encapsulating binder technology allows for improvements in the overall environmental profile of the coating while providing the requisite level of protection and improved aesthetic durability.
The paper also addressed adapting existing and new testing methods and specifications to properly evaluate these emerging waterborne technologies.
EUROCORR is organized by the European Federation of Corrosion and is the leading corrosion prevention event in the region. Dr. Trapani presented his paper during the session on Coatings the afternoon of September 7.
