Dual-Channel Backplane Equalizer and Re-Driver with Integrated 2x2 Crosspoint Switch Eases Design of Robust, High-Speed SDI Systems
Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MSPD), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today announced the introduction of a dual-channel backplane equalizer and re-driver that is optimized for serial digital interface (SDI) applications in the broadcast video market. With excellent jitter performance and less than 50mW typical power consumption per channel, the device joins Mindspeed’s low-power SDI product family, including the industry’s first low-power multi-channel/rate chipset with dual-cable equalizer and driver, and quad video reclocker.
Each independent channel in Mindspeed’s M21004 backplane equalizer and re-driver features pin-configurable input equalization and output de-emphasis, enabling it to compensate for losses accumulated across long traces and connectors. In addition, an integrated, non-blocking 2x2 crosspoint switch provides the functions of signal splitting, switching, and multiplexing within the same small form factor.
“Mindspeed has been dedicated to providing solutions for the signal-integrity challenges faced by broadcast video equipment designers,” said Kurt Busch, senior vice president and general manager of Mindspeed’s high-performance analog products group. “With this device, we enable system designers to achieve robust operation at data rates up to 3Gbps, without the use of costly connectors, material and components.”
Manufactured in low-voltage complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS), the M21004 device may be powered from a 1.2V supply for the lowest power consumption, while an integrated regulator allows it to be powered from any supply up to 3.3V for ultimate flexibility. The low-power device features universal direct coupled (DC) input interfaces, as well as independent input and output supply rails, eliminating the need for additional level shifters on the board. Integrated termination resistors provide further savings in valuable board real estate.
Technical Details
Each independent channel in the M21004 dual-channel trace equalizer and re-driver can operate at any data rate up to 3.2Gbps. Its integrated, fully non-blocking 2x2 crosspoint switch allows each input to be routed to either or both outputs.
The two inputs include integrated 50? termination resistors as well as configuration input trace equalization up to a maximum of 6dB. Also, both 50? current mode logic (CML) output buffers provide configurable de-emphasis up to a maximum of 6dB.
Pricing, Availability and IBC Demonstration
The M21004 is available for sampling, with production scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2009. It is priced at $6.75 in 1,000-unit quantities, and housed in a green and RoHS-compliant, industry-standard 4mmx4mm, 24-pin quad flat no-lead (QFN) package.
The M21004 will be showcased along with Mindspeed’s low-power SDI chipset and industry-leading crosspoint portfolio at the company’s booth #10.F39 during the International Broadcasting Conference (IBC), which will be held September 11 through September 15, 2009, at the RAI Centre in Amsterdam.
