Note
New Time:Â 3:00 P.M., February 23
Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, attorneys for the city and other stakeholders will brief the media on McDonald v. Chicago in advance of oral arguments before the Supreme Court early next month. They will be joined by others with a direct stake in the outcome of the case: mayors, prosecutors, law enforcement officials, medical professionals and the families of gun violence victims.
The event will be held on Tuesday, February 23, at 3:00 p.m. in the Broadcast Center Main Studio on the fourth floor of the National Press Club.A conference line is available for those who wish to call in – NOTE NEW NUMBER:1-888-438-5453, pass code 1048285.
This case marks the first time the Supreme Court will consider a challenge to gun violence prevention laws since its ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008). The Heller Court held that the Second Amendment protects the right to possess a firearm in the home for self defense. Because the decision involved a handgun ban in Washington, D.C., the Court did not address whether the Second Amendment also limits the authority of state governments and municipalities.
The Court's decision will have profound implications for state and local governments and their ability to implement public safety laws that best suit their own communities.
The Court will hear oral arguments on March 2, 2010.
