SUPRApak™ filters, Pall Corporation’s (NYSE:PLL) new alternative to conventional sheet filters, provide the brewing industry with production benefits at lower cost. The technology minimizes beer losses while meeting breweries’ highest standards for purity and clarity.
Over 1.5 billion barrels of beer are brewed each year in 169 countries, and virtually all beer requires some form of filtration or separation. The market size for filtration in the brewing industry is over $400 million.
“Our relationships with brewers focus on meeting their needs for increased yields, reduced expenses and minimal production downtime,” said Jonathan Pratt, global leader, Pall Food & Beverage. “We developed SUPRApak filters to enable breweries to reduce costs, maintain beer quality and meet regulatory requirements.”
Brewers have traditionally used “plate and frame” sheet filters to clarify beer. These filters are open to the air and can potentially expose the product to contamination. In contrast, SUPRApak filters utilize fully enclosed housings. As a result, they eliminate filter sheet disadvantages such as product losses, hygiene concerns and frequent maintenance. Further, the unique high filter area construction of the modules reduces the frequency of replacements that interrupt production. Pall’s compact, easy set-up and easy-to-change SUPRApak filters also provide operational flexibility by reducing the footprint needed for brewing equipment.
Earlier this year, in a typical example, a brewery in Europe converted their plate and frame filter process to a six-module SUPRApak process. When costs for the old and new filtration equipment were compared, savings in excess of 50 percent were realized.
