Nov 9 (Reuters) - Sequenom Inc, a maker of genetic analysis products, posted a wider quarterly loss, partly due to higher expenses, sending its shares down 4 percent.
Net loss for the third quarter was $14.9 million, or 24 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $10.4 million, or 18 cents a share, in the year-ago period.
Total revenue fell to $9.2 million from $11.6 million a year ago.
Analysts on average had expected a loss of 28 cents a share, before items, on revenue of $8.5 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Research and development expenses rose to $8.5 million from $7.1 million last year, while selling, general and administrative expenses rose 18 percent to $12.6 million.
Shares of the company were trading at $3.14 after the bell. They closed at $3.28 Monday on Nasdaq.
