Greenspan: recovery is 'extremely unbalanced'
Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said on Tuesday the U.S. economic recovery was 'extremely unbalanced,' driven largely by high earners benefiting from recovering stock markets and and large corporations.
Small businesses and the jobless are still suffering from the aftermath of a credit crunch that was 'by far the greatest financial crisis, globally, ever' -- including the 1930s Great Depression, said Greenspan in an address to a Credit Union National Association conference.

Weak labor market seen keeping Fed on hold
Thursday's surprise hike in the Fed's discount rate is not a sign of material monetary tightening to come but should be viewed as a technical move by the Fed to normalize emergency liquidity programs, says Northern Trust's Chief Investment Strategist Jim McDonald.
The news on the unemployment front remains clear -- with the U.S. unemployment rate at 9.7 percent and going nowhere fast, the Fed must feel political pressure to remain accommodative, he said in a note.
'Fortunately, we expect the disinflationary pressure of high unemployment and the deleveraging process to allow the Fed to be patient in tightening policy. We don't see economic conditions forcing rate increases this year.'
