ICAP Ocean Tomo, the intellectual property brokerage division of ICAP plc (IAP.L), will offer for sale a patent portfolio owned by Suinno Oy comprised of European Patent EP 1476968 and U.S. and international counterparts and divisionals relating to Broadband Wireless Communication at its upcoming Live Auction March 25th in San Francisco. The portfolio contains one patent and seven patent applications which relate to fixed wireless communication such as Free Space Optics (FSO) and WiMAX.
Conventional methods for fixed wireless optical communication are dependent on atmospheric conditions for their performance and have limited reliability over long distances. In addition, WiMAX and microwaves have poor bandwidth. The patent and patent applications of this portfolio describe a laser transmitter that can transmit photons through all weather conditions at data transfer speeds comparable to the optical fiber network. Selected wavelengths are used to achieve minimum attenuation during optical fixed wireless communication. Repeaters are also employed to overcome obstructions within line of sight. This technology enables wireless broadband communication by combining the high bandwidth of FSO systems with the weather reliability of WiMAX in the same fixed wireless optical transmitter.
"The combination of a conventional semiconductor laser and a quantum cascade laser allows a dynamic range in transmission wavelengths that is so wide that any weather phenomena can be circumvented by the optical transmitter, even advection fog," said Mikko Väänänen, Inventor and Managing Director of Suinno Oy. "Consequently, the invention is now the best known solution to the famous last mile problem of telecommunication. The patents present tremendous licensing potential as we estimate that the invention will replace WiMAX, legacy FSO systems and DSL access solutions during the patent term, which extends to at least 2022 in the US and the EU."
