Highlander SUV Exports to Begin
Toyota City, Feb 9, 2012 - (JCN Newswire) - Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces that Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana Inc. (TMMI), one of TMC's production bases in the United States, is to increase its annual production capacity by 50,000 units (from approx. 280,000 a year to approx. 330,000 a year) in the second half of 2013. In addition, TMMI will start production of the "Highlander Hybrid" gasoline-electric hybrid SUV and increase "Highlander" gasoline-engine SUV production. The developments represent approximately 400 million U.S. dollars of new investment and approximately 400 new jobs.
Also, units of the increased production of the gasoline-engine Highlander will also be exported to Australia, Russia and other markets starting in the second half of 2013.
Approximately 1.3 million units of the Highlander (introduced in 2001) and Highlander Hybrid (introduced in 2005) were sold in the North American market between 2001 through the end of 2011.
Based on the concept of producing vehicles where the demand exists, TMC will continue to promote still greater localization and autonomy of operations ranging from development and production to sales and after-sales service.
