Targeting UTM, Firewall and VPN Boxes, Enhanced SparX-III Family Fits Many Form Factors; Joint Demo with Freescale Semiconductor and Lanner Electronics at RSA
Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: VTSS), a leading provider of advanced IC solutions for Carrier and Enterprise networks, introduced today the latest generation of its widely deployed SparX-III™ Gigabit Ethernet (GE) switches with EcoEthernet™ 2.0 technology. The new SparX-III devices, the VSC7420-01, VSC7421-01, and VSC7422-01, feature 10-, 17-, and 25-ports, respectively, of 100/1GE and 2.5G speeds, in various port configurations and are optimized specifically for firewall, intrusion detection and intrusion prevention functions in Unified Threat Management (UTM) systems.
According to Frost & Sullivan and other market analysts, the UTM market, particularly in small and medium business appliances, is one of the few recession-free Enterprise communication markets, registering compound annual growth of at least 20-percent per year since 2007. Growth was close to 33-percent annually in 2008, and the combined five-year trend going forward should bring the global UTM market to $7 billion by 2016.
"The newest SparX-III Ethernet ICs deliver better interoperability with control processors that emphasize security and packet analysis, increasing performance and reducing overall system costs," said Uday Mudoi, director of product marketing at Vitesse. "Network appliance security becomes increasingly important as businesses migrate towards Enterprise cloud computing. Vitesse offers a complete portfolio of Enterprise Ethernet switch and PHY products that address low-, mid- and high-end UTM systems, along with a high level of hardware and software reuse, resulting in better ROI and TTM for our security appliance OEM customers."
The SparX-III devices deliver several unique advantages over competitive offerings including:
- Integrated Gigabit Ethernet ports: Up to 12 integrated 10/100/1000BASE-T ports, eliminating the need for external PHYs, reducing BOM cost and required real estate
- Flexible configuration and advanced functionality:
- Two of the 1G SGMII ports can also be configured as 2.5G SGMII, allowing higher bandwidth uplink ports to a processor, resulting in higher performance UTM systems
- No need for external DRAMs, reducing BOM cost
- Hardware based loop detect function, reducing load on the external processor
Additionally, the devices include Vitesse's EcoEthernet 2.0 technology to deliver unprecedented energy efficiency with unique green features such as PerfectReach™ intelligent cable length algorithm and ActiPHY™ automatic link-power down, as well as IEEE 802.3az idle power savings. This enables UTM customers to reduce power consumption and to support EnergyStar compliance.
Proven Interoperability
Vitesse has cooperated with Freescale Semiconductor to deliver system level solutions for the UTM market. In 2011, Lanner Electronics introduced the 10G-enabled MR630 network appliance platform aimed at the UTM market, based on Freescale's quad-core P2040/41 and Vitesse's VSC7407 Ethernet switch.
"Vitesse's latest SparX-III family leverages Freescale's mutual investment with our customers in the current MR630 platform," said Nikolay Guenov, segment marketing manager with Freescale's Networking Processor Division. "The high level of integration provided by Vitesse's switch family, combined with the breadth of Freescale processors, delivers a multitude of I/O configurations and substantial cost advantages versus competitive solutions."
Freescale, Lanner and Vitesse at RSA 2012
With up to 16 GE LAN ports, two management ports and a variety of customizable options, the MR630 platform will be highlighted in both the Freescale Semiconductor and Lanner booths at the RSA Conference from February 27 to March 2, 2012 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Freescale and Lanner are located in the South Exhibit Hall at booths #126 and #1459, respectively.
