OFC Live Demo ShowsEDC Enabled Extended-Reach DWDM Links with 10GBASE-ZR SFP+ Transceivers
OFC/NFOEC 2012 – Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: VTSS), a leading provider of advanced IC solutions for Carrier and Enterprise networks, is pairing its quad channel VSC8248 Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC) and Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) device with SFP+ 10GBASE-ZR DWDM modules from JDSU, to demonstrate 10 Gbps DWDM links beyond 100 km – exceeding the 80-km standard for 10GBASE-ZR applications.
Linear modules, as opposed to limiting and retimed modules, require robust EDC capability on the host card in order to provide link margins required for the longer reaches beyond specifications in the 10GBASE-ZR applications. Part of Vitesse's FlexEQ™ family of adaptive equalization technologies, Vitesse's VSC8248 FFE/DFE EDC architecture delivers:
- Performance well in excess of the 80km ZR target resulting in additional system margin, link distance and/or improved OSNR/Chromatic Dispersion tolerance, and
- Support for multiple applications between 9.9 to 11.3 Gbps, including SONET/SDH, 10G Fibre Channel and 10G Ethernet.
All these benefits contribute to an increase in system network flexibility. JDSU's initiative to support the ZR application in the form of compact SFP+ modules means that ZR links can be achieved with unprecedented front-panel port density and low power as well as minimal system cost.
"Achieving optical reaches of 80km and beyond has always been an ultimate goal for each module format. The combination of Vitesse's EDC and JDSU's SFP+ ZR enables longer optical links can be achieved economically and at the highest front panel density possible," said Andrew Schmitt, directing analyst, optical at Infonetics. "This interoperability proof point should encourage wider deployment of SFP+ into DWDM applications."
In addition to the newer ZR modules, Vitesse's highly flexible VSC8248 quad EDC device can also serve as a host for SR, LR, ER, as well as passive copper attach applications in SFP+, QSFP, and CXP module formats, enabling the customer to design a single universal card that supports numerous applications.
"Our customers must balance the need for lower cost and power with maximum system flexibility and front-panel port density," stated Richard Interrante, director of connectivity product marketing at Vitesse. "JDSU is a recognized leader in high performance long reach optical module design, particularly with the release of their latest SFP+ ZR modules. The combination of these modules with Vitesse's field-proven EDC/CDR products gives our customers a highly robust, flexible, low cost solution for 80km links and beyond, extending our product leadership in these Enterprise and Metro market applications."
Vitesse Signal Integrity
Vitesse EDC products integrate the Company's widely deployed FlexEQ and VScope™ technologies. FlexEQ adaptive equalization technology reduces the cost of transmission by allowing signals to travel farther, faster, and error free in challenging fiber and copper applications. VScope embedded waveform technology allows confirmation of signal quality and system operation up to the SFP+ connector along with a full suite of BIST functions. These capabilities accelerate the diagnostic and troubleshooting phase of new system design, allowing OEMs to bring their products to market quickly. Vitesse and JDSU at OFC/NFOEC in Los Angeles
Vitesse and JDSU will demonstrate the EDC and SFP+ ZR technology at the OFC/NFOEC Expo, March 6-8, 2012 in Los Angeles, Calif., at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Vitesse's Corporate Village Room #2157. Meetings are by appointment only. JDSU is located at Booth #1403.
Attendees are also invited to visit Vitesse's FTTX Ecosystem showcase at OFC/NFOEC. In collaboration with other industry leaders including Hisense, D-Tech, Anritsu, Boardlight, Cyoptics, Oplink, Source Photonics and Zenko Technologies, Vitesse has organized a joint demo, located at the Light Brigade FTTX Resource Center in Booth #2747. This event will feature ICs, modules and system level demos for the EPON, GPON, XGPON1 and 40G WDM PON. Learn more about Vitesse's FTTX Ecosystem at www.vitesse.com/fttx.
