The Athens Group, developer of environmentally-sensitive luxury hotels and resorts has learned that its latest project, Montage Deer Valley in Park City, Utah was awarded Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
"We deeply appreciate receiving national recognition of Montage Deer Valley's design and environmental excellence," said Kim Richards, president of The Athens Group. "We are proud to collaborate with Montage Hotels & Resorts, which shares our great respect for the environment." Montage Deer Valley opened in December 2010.
Fewer than 100 hotels worldwide have achieved LEED certification at Certified Silver, Gold or Platinum levels. The LEED Certification system recognizes innovation in design, site selection, energy efficiency, water efficiency, and indoor environmental quality among other criteria.
"Montage Deer Valley's LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership," said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. "The urgency of USGBC's mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and Montage Deer Valley serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish."
The resort's commitment to the environment traces back to 2007, when the Environmental Protection Agency selected Montage Deer Valley as the first Environmentally Responsible Redevelopment and Reuse (ER3) project in the nation.
"We saw great potential to transform the once-contaminated Daly West Mine site into a world-class mountain resort destination," said Jeff Mongan, senior vice president, The Athens Group. "After completing environmental remediation of the site, we built the hotel to be sustainable and minimize the impact on the environment. We are honored that Montage Deer Valley has achieved Silver LEED certification."
According to Elliott Gilberg, Director of EPA's Office of Site Remediation Enforcement, "Montage agreed to incorporate significant sustainable features such as minimizing waste, preserving open space, and using renewable energy in the Empire Canyon project, which is a key reason why EPA included it in the ER3 initiative."
The Athens Group, with HKS/Hill Glazier Studio, designed Montage Deer Valley with a theme reminiscent of the great mountain lodges of North America. Montage Deer Valley is located on the "high ground" of Deer Valley Resort, named America's #1 ski resort by Ski magazine, and offers ski-in ski-out access to the mountain. Montage Deer Valley features 154 deluxe guestrooms and more than 66 suites and private residences, an alpine-inspired spa, event space, retail shops and indoor recreation areas.
