Tokyo, Mar 13, 2012 - (JCN Newswire) - Business continuity planning, the procedures an organisation puts in place to ensure essential functions can continue in the event of a disaster, is helping to drive recruitment demand in Kansai according to Robert Walters' recently released 2012 Salary Survey. With many companies in Japan preparing for potential business disruptions, decentralisation strategies are shifting supply chain and IT positions away from Tokyo to other parts of the country, which has spurred job growth in Western Japan.
Key findings:
OVERVIEW FOR 2011
RENEWED FOCUS ON SUPPLY CHAIN FUNCTIONS
- Given the increased focus on business continuity planning, professionals able to implement new supply chain procedures experienced hiring demand following the March earthquake
- Procurement professionals were actively recruited by domestic manufacturers to take advantage of the high value of the yen and increased importing activity
- Though supply chain professionals were in high demand, much of the recruitment was on a replacement basis to upskill existing teams
CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM FOR BUSINESS GROWTH
- Decentralisation strategies led to new hiring for some support functions outside of Tokyo
- Cloud computing and data centre professionals attracted demand across Japan as data virtualisation became a priority for many businesses
- Healthcare recruitment remained strong, though employers remained cautious particularly with increased competition in the pharmaceutical space from generic medicine manufacturers
- Industrial sector salaries rose by 5-10% for these Kansai-based job seekers, although total remuneration was generally lower than a similar role based in Tokyo
OUTLOOK FOR 2012
TALENT RETENTION A PRIORITY FOR KANSAI BUSINESSES
- Competition across Japan for bilingual application and implementation developers should cause salaries to rise 5-10% in order to attract and retain talent in Kansai
- In Japan, salaries are anticipated to increase by 1% on average across all industries
EMPLOYERS SEEKING GLOBAL SKILL SETS
- Offshoring of some functions should create demand for information technology and human resources professionals with vendor management skills
- English ability will increasingly be required as globalisation efforts in Kansai create more regional offices with foreign reporting lines
- Firms will look to hire technical sales professionals able to communicate with overseas clients and foreign vendors as the focus towards globalisation intensifies
