The online university continues to design doctoral specializations with an emphasis on sharing between the PhD and DBA, adding Accounting, IT Management, and Project Management specializations to both degrees
Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high-quality online degree programs for working adults, has announced six new doctoral-level business specializations. Both the online PhD in Business Management and the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) will now offer specializations in Accounting, IT Management, and Project Management. As of March 31, 2012, more than 37,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella. The learning and career outcomes of Capella's students and alumni can be found at www.capellaresults.org
A choice of doctoral business programs
There are common
elements in each specialization that are shared in both degree programs.
However, the core curriculum and type of research differs depending on
whether a specialization is part of Capella's PhD in Business Management
or DBA program. The PhD in Business Management focuses on scholarly
research and writing, ethical theory, a global perspective, technology,
and a systems-thinking approach. A PhD is often chosen by those seeking
faculty positions, as well as leadership, advanced research, or
consulting positions. Capella's online DBA focuses on applied research
and practical applications. It also features a prescribed course
sequence, an applied dissertation project, and built-in dissertation
milestones designed to provide students with a clear path toward
completing their DBA in three years. Online courseroom discussions,
specially designed networking sites, and face-to-face weekend
residencies provide ongoing opportunities to build professional
relationships and share knowledge with other business leaders around the
country. A DBA is often chosen by those looking to conduct applied
research, teach, consult or lead.
Accounting specializations address global accounting issues
The
shared specialization courses in Capella's online PhD
in Business Management, Accounting specialization and online DBA
Accounting specialization are designed to prepare students for
faculty, leadership, consulting, and research roles in the fast-growing
field of accounting. They address the global accounting issues faced by
multinational organizations and other companies doing business globally;
ethical and legal issues related to accounting; and the strategic,
system-wide implications of accounting issues and practices. The
Accounting specializations also include intensive instruction in
electronic research technology focused on conducting efficient,
effective global research.
Global leadership, implementation, and innovations in IT Management
Capella'sPhD
in Business Management, IT Management specialization and DBA
IT management specialization cover such topics as aligning IT
and business strategies, evaluating and guiding the implementation of IT
governance models from a global perspective, guiding the implementation
of IT policies and processes, and innovating and managing within the IT
system development life cycle. Students examine the role of the IT
leader against a backdrop of changing workforce considerations,
including offshore, contract, multicultural, and multigenerational
workers in global enterprises.
Project management specializations offer advanced coursework and
hands-on experience
Shared courses for Capella's PhD
in Business Management, Project Management specializationandDBA
Project Management specialization include advanced concepts and
methodologies in project management, projects as complex adaptive
systems, advanced risk management systems and research, and dynamics of
program and portfolio management. The specializations also offer
hands-on practice managing virtual teams and a focus on global
project-management theory and practice, allowing students to gain the
skills necessary to lead projects and programs in a variety of settings,
and to conduct appropriate research to improve project-management
practices.
