The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, presented the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation to Pat Varga, Dominion President of the Royal Canadian Legion, at a reception held Sunday evening during the Legion's Biennial Convention.
"During the past year, I have had many opportunities to witness Mrs. Pat Varga's dedication and commitment to her fellow Veterans," said Minister Blaney. "She has demonstrated great care and concern for all those who have served our country and continue to serve today. Our Government is proud to recognize Mrs. Varga's extraordinary efforts in honouring our Veterans and our men and women in uniform."
Pat Varga is a retired member of the Canadian Forces who first joined the Royal Canadian Legion in 1980. In June 2002, she was elected Dominion vice-president and in 2008, she was chosen as the Dominion first vice-president. In 2010, Mrs. Varga became Dominion President. She is a Life Member of Branch 365 (Coleville), Saskatchewan Command, and is a recipient of the Legion's Meritorious Service Medal and the Palm Leaf.
The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation includes a bar, which can be worn below official decorations on a recipient's blazer, as well as a lapel pin for civilian wear and a certificate.
The Commendation is presented to individuals who have contributed to the care and well-being of Veterans and to the remembrance of their contributions, sacrifices and achievements. It is intended primarily for Veterans, but in some circumstances may also be awarded to non-Veterans. Nominations may be submitted at any time and are reviewed annually by an advisory committee.
