The 2012 Effect: Nearly Three in Four Holidaying Brits Set to Staycation This Easter / New Halifax research published today shows how much impact the events of 2012 had on Brits' holiday habits

HALIFAX, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 03/28/13 -- After the Olympics, Paralympics, and the Diamond Jubilee, one in six Brits are now more likely to holiday here in Britain. And the impact is immediately obvious this Easter, as nearly three quarters of those holidaying are staying in Britain. Brits most affected by the events of 2012 were those who live in London, and those aged between 25 and 34.

The research also shows that people expect British holidays to be cheaper, as the average expected spend for a week away in Britain is GBP 388, which is GBP 112 less than they'd expect to spend on a week in Europe. The extra spend shows just how important it is for Brits holidaying abroad to budget carefully.

Richard Washington, Halifax credit cards, says:

"We recently experienced our coldest March day for 27 years, so it is understandable that many Brits would be tempted by a beach holiday at the moment; but despite that, nearly three quarters of Brits planning a break this Easter are holidaying here.

"2012 was a great year to be British, and there is no doubt the success of the Olympics, the Paralympics, and the Diamond Jubilee will encourage even more of us to experience what Britain has to offer. With nearly three quarters of those holidaying this Easter staying in Britain, the 2012 effect is clear, and nowhere is the impact more obvious than in the Capital, as 38% of Londoners say they are now more likely to holiday in Britain.

"With an expected spend of GBP 500 in one week, those Brits holidaying abroad this Easter will need to budget carefully; with the Halifax Clarity credit card there are no fees or withdrawal charges when using the card abroad."

Holiday Hali-facts

-- 17% of Brits are more likely to holiday in Britain given the events of
2012 (the Olympics, Paralympics and Diamond Jubilee). However, 38% of
Londoners are now more likely to holiday in the Britain after 2012. In
Yorkshire and Humberside only 6% of people are more likely to holiday in
    Britain after 2012.

-- The events of 2012 had the biggest impact on those aged 25-34, as 39%
are now more likely to holiday in Britain. After that, the older Brits
    get, the less the effect (35-44= 16%; 45-54 = 11%; 55-64 = 9%; and 65+ =
    7%).

-- The age group most affected by the events of 2012 - 25-24 year olds -
are also by far the most likely to holiday in Britain this Easter, as
one in three are set to holiday here. Among those least affected, the
over 65s, only 13% are going to holiday in Britain this Easter.

-- 77% of those surveyed aren't going on holiday over Easter, but of those
who are going away, nearly three quarters (74%) are going on a weekend
away or a longer holiday in Britain.

-- Of those who provided an estimate, people expect to spend an average of
GBP 500 on a week's holiday in Europe - GBP 112 more than they would
expect to spend on a week's holiday in Britain (GBP 388). However, the
average expected spend on a week's break from work, spent at home is GBP
    170.

-- The amount holidaymakers expect to spend on a week's holiday in Britain
changes depending on their age. Of those who provided estimates, nearly
two-thirds (63%) of 25-34 year olds expect to spend less than GBP 400,
while nearly half (46%) of 45-54 year olds expect to spend more than GBP
    400.

-- However, when given the choice, most people who would like to on holiday
this Easter would still choose to go on a beach holiday (46%). Fewer
than one in four would choose to holiday in Britain (24%). This is also
true of the 25-34 year old age group, as 59% would choose a beach
holiday, and only 12% would choose to holiday in Britain.
