Stockholm Pride's #GOWEST initiative has prompted a rise in the global support of the LGBT community, making it a global trending topic with celebrities and other influencers engaging in the conversation to push Russia to reverse its stance on Gay Pride.
The groundbreaking advocacy initiative raises awareness and support for the lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender community in Russia after a court decision, where Moscow City Hall enacted a hundred-year ban on the LGBT annual parade held in the capital city of Russia. The Moscow courts have stated that it is not open to any reconsideration until the year 2112 at the earliest.
In order to raise awareness on the banning of Pride and the discrimination and violation of rights in the LGBT community in Russia, Stockholm Pride has invited Russians to #GOWEST and celebrate Pride in Stockholm, Sweden, instead.
On the official website, gowest2013.com, supporters can create a customized tweet invite to be translated into Russian and transmitted from a randomly-selected city in Russia in attempt to become a trending topic on Twitter in Russia.
On May 17, #GOWEST was a trending topic in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, but the objective of Stockholm Pride's campaign is much greater. To trend globally, Stockholm Pride is requesting tweeters worldwide to send a message of love and support from gowest2013.com and spread the word about the movement.
Several celebrity personalities from around the world have joined the cause, including Darren Hayes, Boy George, Sara and Tegan, Nicole Fiorentino of the Smashing Pumpkins and Alexander Bard, among others.
Stockholm Pride is hoping tweeters from across the globe can send a message of love and support from gowest2013.com and spread the word about the movement.
The social media campaign was concepted in concert with M&C Saatchi's Stockholm office.
