HMG Says GM's Win Is A Death Sentence For GM Drivers

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, April 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, a federal judge ruled that General Motors cannot be forced to issue an emergency "Park It Now" alert to drivers of GM vehicles with faulty ignition switches. Bob Hilliard, the Texas attorney who requested the mandatory injunction on April 4, says the decision puts motorists' lives at risk.

Robert Hilliard, partner at Hilliard Munoz Gonzales, is lead attorney in the lawsuit against General Motors.

GM'S WIN MEANS SOMEONE WILL DIE
Hilliard of Hilliard Munoz Gonzales LLP (HMG) says that GM betrayed a moral obligation to save lives when they refused to issue an Emergency Alert to force drivers of GM vehicles to "Park It Now." Hilliard continued:

  • "They made winning a hearing on technical legal arguments more important than saving their own customers' lives."
  • "GM knows, as a fact, that by winning this hearing, people will die or be seriously injured in their defective vehicles. There are both legal and moral issues in play here. Unfortunately at GM, when profits come up against morality, profits seldom lose."
  • "Why in the world would a car company choose a technical legal victory over a human life?"
  • "Somewhere in American tomorrow, a family will lose a loved one in one of these defective vehicles. A life, needlessly ended and a family forever changed. Meanwhile, GM celebrates winning on a technicality and feeling that they have permission to keep 2 million dangerous cars on the roads of America."

THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT
In March, Hilliard filed the first class-action lawsuit in the nation against GM on behalf of victims, families and survivors of those injured or killed in crashes caused by a faulty ignition switch in eight GM models. It is believed that over 300 deaths have occurred because of the problem, which GM admits it has known about since 2004. GM recalled 1.6 million affected cars in February 2014, ten years after discovering the dangerous equipment failure.
