WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - A new survey shows Donald Trump is likely to get 39.6 percent of the votes compared to 46.2 percent for Hillary Clinton in the first presidential election.
However, the Republican nominee appears unlikely to end up with a smaller percentage of the vote than what George H.W. Bush received in 1992 against Bill Clinton, according to the survey conducted by Politico.
George H.W. Bush, the GOP candidate in the 1992 election, earned about 37.5 percent of the vote.
The presence of a strong third-party candidate, Ross Perot, is believed to have cost the Bush Senior dear.
Trump still enjoys a floor of about 40 percent of the electorate despite weeks of negative news coverage after Trump's poor performance in the first debate, his lewd remarks about women, and a number of women coming out publicly with sexual assault allegations against him.
Trump denied them, and his wife Melania Trump certified that he is a gentleman.
