Evolving military operations demand advanced vetronics systems
The mission requirements for the military are constantly evolving. Innovative ISR technologies, HD video streaming, high-bandwidth networking hardware, and advanced threat detection sensors are some of the new requirements that armed forces across the world are integrating into their ground vehicles. This gives rise to the need for advanced vetronics systems that can handle new hardware and software upgrades. The high data-exchange rates that are provided by using open COTS architectures generate complex signal-integrity issues at all levels of the system, including the processor chips.
According to Moutushi Saha, a lead analyst at Technavio for defense research, "The emergence of UGVs is increasing the possibilities of ISR operations. A wide range of payload systems, such as imaging systems, night vision systems, and electronic signal jamming systems, are being developed for their integration with UGVs. Many such systems are used simultaneously to generate enhanced ISR data, and this requires the seamless integration of the systems."
Modernization of military vehicles
Global military forces are constantly modernizing their fleet of vehicles to provide military forces with improved crew survivability, easy navigation, enhanced surveillance performance, better inter-vehicle and intra-vehicle communications, and higher firepower. Modernization programs include upgrades for the weapons systems, networking capabilities, threat detection systems, fire suppression systems, communication systems, command and control (C2) systems, and other systems that are required for a mission. The upgrades automatically include those for dedicated vetronics subsystems.
"Upgrading the vetronics systems of military vehicles increases the interoperability of the systems, reduces the risk and cost of multi-system integration, and increases the efficiency of the vehicle operators by reducing their response time. Armed forces across the world are modernizing the vetronics systems of their ground vehicles to achieve higher capability and functionality on their vehicle platforms," says Moutushi.
Development of advanced battery technologies
Another driver influencing the growth of the global military vetronics market is the development of advanced battery technologies. Military vetronics systems incorporate a wide range of electronics and electrical components that consume a lot of power. The advances in battery technologies have enabled the development of a central vetronics system that is connected to all the electronic sensors and equipment on board a military vehicle.
The centralized vetronics system forms a complete BMS that can collect data from all the equipment in a vehicle. It can also analyze the data within the vehicle as well as transmit/receive such information to/from nearby and remote vehicles and base stations to create a common and shared mission assessment. Technological advances in batteries, such as the SafeCore technology that provides endurance to batteries in harsh conditions, further increase the scalability of military vetronics systems to integrate more military equipment.
