MasterCard International is launching a series of
consumer education initiatives across the country during this year's
upcoming Financial Literacy Month. The April events are focused on
helping consumers learn to successfully manage their personal finances
and showcase MasterCard's commitment to financial literacy and
consumer education.
Beginning on April 12 with the launch of the Spanish language version of its Debt Know How Web site (www.debtknowhow.com), MasterCard is aiming to increase the reach and appeal of its debt management information and resources. The Debt Know How Web site is an interactive money management resource that provides consumers free, easy-to-use information, tips and resources to manage their debt.
The Web site is an extension of MasterCard's Debt Know How program which helps consumers learn more about managing financial debt. Developed in conjunction with the University of Minnesota, Debt Know How brings together community leaders, educational institutions and consumers to create an environment for learning about debt management through a curriculum of easy-to-understand tips and resources. Since its inception in 2005, the program has trained nearly 200 community leaders to teach debt management skills to consumers across the country.
"MasterCard is excited about Financial Literacy Month and looks forward to continuing our commitment to help consumers take a thoughtful and informed approach toward successfully managing their finances," said Joshua Peirez, MasterCard's group executive for global public policy. "Our commitment to financial literacy is year round, and we look forward to engaging community leaders and consumers in our education efforts."
On April 25th, MasterCard is participating in the 2006 Financial Literacy Day on Capitol Hill showcasing its consumer education programs to Members of Congress and their staff. The featured programs include Debt Know How, Are You Credit Wise?, and the Peace of Mind Program, developed in partnership with the Independent Community Bankers of America.
Michigan State Representative Dave Robertson, chair of Michigan's House Banking and Financial Services Committee, recently co-hosted two Debt Know How seminars for his constituents and praises the program as a necessary tool to help manage debt.
"MasterCard's Debt Know How program offers my constituents and consumers across the country the necessary resources to effectively manage debt and improve their personal finances," said Robertson. "I'm grateful that MasterCard is moving forward with these much needed education efforts."
MasterCard will wrap up its April consumer education activities by participating in the 2006 California Summit on Financial Literacy on April 26th. The Summit gathers the nation's thought leaders in personal finance education to provide solutions to financial illiteracy issues.
MasterCard's education activities aren't limited to Financial Literacy Month. The consumer education agenda will continue throughout the year, beginning on May 1 as MasterCard and Wright College co-host a Debt Know How seminar during Money Smart Week in Chicago. The seminar is open to students and local Chicago-area residents.
About Financial Literacy Month
The National Council on Economic Education, it's State Councils and Centers for Economic Education, the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, its State affiliates, and its partner organizations have designated April as 'Financial Literacy Month' to educate the public about the need for increased financial literacy in the United States. The United States Congress passed a resolution in April 2005, supporting the goals and ideals of Financial Literacy Month and encouraging government organizations, non profit institutions and businesses to observe the month with appropriate activities.
