BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AFX) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is preparing for another 200 of its suppliers to become RFID compliant by the end of this year, Johnny Dobbs, executive vice president of logistic and supply said on Tuesday.
RFID - or radio frequency identification - is an inventory tracking technology that is expected to some day replace bar codes.
Wal-Mart , the world's largest retailer, expects another 300 suppliers to be online by the end of 2007, for a total of 600.
The company, which has been at the forefront of developing and implementing inventory technology, expects total RFID compliance to take 'many, many years,' Dobbs told reporters during a tour of a distribution center at Wal-Mart headquarters.
Wal-Mart shares were up fractionally at $46.21 in midday trading. This story was supplied by MarketWatch. For further information see www.marketwatch.com.
