Recognizing that special skills are required to be an effective supervisor in a nonprofit organization, The Nonprofit Center at La Salle University has created a series of programs to help new nonprofit managers enhance their supervisional and instructional leadership.
The Certificate in Nonprofit Supervisory Management is a non-degreed program that requires a total of 21 hours of study through workshops presented by The Nonprofit Center. Workshops cover such topics as effective supervision, how to conduct performance reviews, workplace communication issues, and group dynamics. Certificate students can also choose from a wide range of elective workshops, from how to run effective meetings, to conflict resolution, to negotiation skills.
"So many of the nonprofit executive directors we work with have asked for help in building the supervisory skills of their staff," said Sonia J. Stamm, director of educational programs for The Nonprofit Center. "They have expertise in their program areas, but when they become supervisors, no one has taught them how to manage others. So that's the intent of this new program," she added.
The Nonprofit Center's certificate programs are in-depth learning experiences in a specific aspect of nonprofits that provide continuing education units from the La Salle University School of Business. The center offers six certificate programs for nonprofit professionals, in Board Leadership, Financial Management, Fundraising, Human Resources, Nonprofit Management, and the new Certificate in Supervisory Management.
A certificate can be completed in a few months, but students, most of whom are full-time professionals, may take up to three years.
The Nonprofit Center helps strengthen nonprofit organizations throughout the Delaware Valley so they can better serve their constituents. Through educational programs, leadership development, training and consulting services and an information and referral network, the center's team of experts works with thousands of organizations to enhance their ability to govern, manage and perform more effectively in a competitive environment. Founded in 1981, The Nonprofit Center is a program of the La Salle University School of Business.
