FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - PSA Peugeot Citroen CEO Christian Streiff spoke out in favour of a 'competitive ecological car' to reporters at the Frankfurt car show.
'PSA is back and is progressing fast', Streiff said. He reiterated that the new product campaign launched by the group should translate into a programme for 53 new vehicles.
Streiff also said he wants to promote a 'maximum differentiation' and a 'maximum synergy' between the group's two brand names, a strategy to restore competitiveness, an area where it is targeting the number one ranking. Cost savings, with gains from acquisitions and logistics, should contribute to this.
'Our objective is to propose products of the future at a competitive price', Streiff said. 'The subject is not technology at any cost, but it is competitive ecology'.
Streiff said PSA has already seen results in terms of reduced carbon dioxide emissions, with 1 mln vehicles emitting less than 140 grammes of CO2 per kilometre in 2006.
He spoke in favour of a diversified approach towards the environment. 'There will not be a single technology which will prevail, but a number of technologies' which will be used, he said.
PSA wants to at the same time 'consolidate its leadership in small cars, continue with biofuels and launch a massive strategy' in hybrid engines. The main aim will be to have 1 mln vehicles equipped with the 'micro-hybrid' technology, with the 'stop and start' system by 2011. 'The most expensive technologies', such as the 'full hybrid', will be 'reserved for the top of the range' vehicles, the CEO said. tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomson.com afp/cmr/lam COPYRIGHT Copyright AFX News Limited 2007.
