MILAN (Thomson Financial) - Italy's new car registrations fell 26.42 percent in August to 77,156, from 104,857 a year earlier, the ministry for infrastructure and transport said.
In the first eight months, registrations were down 12.04 percent to 1,531,598, from 1,741,322 in the same period of 2007, the ministry said.
In August, Fiat brand registrations fell 22.01 percent to 19,705, representing a market share of 25.54 percent, against 24.10 a year earlier.
Fiat's brand Alfa Romeo brand registrations fell 25.47 percent to 2,309, giving a market share of 2.99 percent, against 2.95 percent.
Fiat's brand Lancia registrations fell 26.38 percent to 3,553, with an unchanged market share of 4.60 percent.
Fiat's overall market share rose to 33.13 percent, from 31.65.
Among other manufacturers, Ford registrations were down 19.65 percent to 6,150, giving a market share of 7.97 percent, up from 7.30 a year earlier.
Volkswagen registrations fell 35.68 percent to 4,870, representing a market share of 6.31 percent, down from 7.22.
General Motors brand Opel registrations fell 38.53 percent to 4,439, or a market share of 5.75 percent, against 6.89.
