Mayor Segarra and employees from The Hartford conclude tree-planting initiative at Asylum Hill's Sigourney Square Park
The Hartford is partnering with the city of Hartford, Knox Parks and local volunteers to honor Arbor Day by planting 50 treeson Asylum Hill funded by The Hartford's $25,000 grant to Knox Parks. Volunteers and residents planted 33 new trees on Niles and Laurel Streets earlier this month and will plant 17 trees today in Sigourney Square Park.
"Working with the city and Knox Parks to plant more trees on Asylum Hill is a further expression of The Hartford's ongoing commitment to the neighborhood and to the environment," said Karen Tripp, The Hartford's executive vice president, marketing and communications. "By focusing our Asylum Hill efforts on improving education, supporting the community, and revitalizing the neighborhood, we believe we can make a significant positive difference over the coming years."
Mayor Segarra joined in the tree planting and expressed his support. "I applaud The Hartford's commitment to the environment and to the Asylum Hill community. By increasing our tree canopy, they will help beautify our city for generations to come," said Mayor Segarra.
Ron Pitz, Knox Parks executive director, shared, "While already a tremendous accomplishment, this is only the beginning for us. Studies have demonstrated that concentrated reforestation over the next decade is critical to restore Hartford's diminishing urban forest."
The Hartford's grant is part of the company's recently announced partnership with the City and Asylum Hill community to contribute $7 million over five years to key revitalization projects and strategic partnerships for education, community support and neighborhood revitalization.
