On 9 September 2011 at 2:00PM, The Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH), a veterans organization comprised solely of recipients of the Purple Heart medal, will conduct a special memorial service in the auditorium of the Women in Military Service for America Foundation (WIMSA), Arlington National Cemetery, to honor past and present military nurses.
Following the memorial service, National Commander Bill Hutton, assisted by other National Officers, will lay a wreath at the Nurse Memorial, a granite statue of a nurse in uniform that looks out upon the Army, Navy and Air Force nurses who so valiantly earned their right to lie at Arlington among the hundreds of nurses buried in Section 21 -- also called the "Nurses Section." The public is welcome to attend the wreath laying ceremony. A reception for the Nurses and MOPH Members will follow the ceremony in the WIMSA Hall of Honor.
This annual memorial service gives our National Officers and Members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart the opportunity to recognize and thank those Nurses who are instrumental in caring for our wounded service members and who saved the lives of many of our Members.
The organization now known as the "Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) of the U.S.A. Inc.," was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all who have received the decoration. Chartered by the Congress, The MOPH is unique among Veteran Service Organizations in that all its members were wounded in combat. For this sacrifice, they were awarded the Purple Heart Medal. With grants from the MOPH Service Foundation, the MOPH and its Ladies Auxiliary promote Patriotism, Fraternalism, and the Preservation of America's military history. Most importantly, they provide comfort and assistance to all Veterans and their families, especially those requiring claims assistance with the VA, those who are homeless, and those requiring employment assistance. MOPH volunteers through the VAVS program, provide assistance to hospitalized veterans at VA sites and State Veterans Homes.
