Association Agenda Includes Strategic Immigration Reform, Marketplace Fairness, Electronics Recycling and Free Trade
As part of a series of industry events focused on Capitol Hill, members of the Consumer Electronics Association's (CEA)® Board of Industry Leaders and the InnovationMovement will meet tomorrow with members of the House of Representatives and congressional staff to advocate for action on key issues of importance to consumers, the consumer electronics (CE) industry and the health of the U.S. economy.
CEA members will participate in dozens of meetings with members of Congress and congressional staff to bring attention to CEA's policy agenda, most notably strategic immigration reform but also marketplace fairness; free trade; electronics recycling and Energy Star reform; privacy and electronics data collection; and sensible and balanced intellectual property (IP) policy. At each meeting, CEA members will deliver educational information on each of these issues. The visits will be bolstered by an ad in support of strategic immigration reform that will run tomorrow in Politico, followed by CEA's Digital Patriots Dinner, which honors Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), and businessman and philanthropist David Rubenstein for their support of technology innovation.
"The industry professionals in town from CEA's member companies speak directly to the issues that impact their businesses as manufacturers and retailers, as well as to the broader consumer electronics industry and the U.S. economy," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA. "By showing unified commitment on policy issues that hit close to home, we hope that members of Congress will understand the effect these policies have on American businesses."
As CEA's Board of Industry Leaders make in-person visits, CEA's Innovation Movement will hold a Virtual Lobby Day. The 200,000-plus Innovation Movement members can contact their members of Congress through email and social media in support of passage of Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren's (D-CA) Immigration Driving Entrepreneurship in America (IDEA) Act (H.R.2161) as well as H.R. 43, introduced by Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA). Rep. Issa's bill would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to eliminate the diversity immigrant program and to re-allocate those visas to certain employment-based immigrants who obtain an advanced degree in the United States.
"Every year we train tens of thousands of foreign-born students at top universities only to send them home after they complete their education," said Shapiro. "We need to keep these talented individuals here in the United States to innovate and create American jobs. The Lofgren and Issa bills show that this is a bipartisan issue. It's time for Congress to come together and change policies so we can keep our doors open for the innovators of tomorrow."
