SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --The Dannon Company, Inc. today awarded Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) a Dannon Next Generation Nutrition® Grant totaling $30,000 in support of Know Greater Heroes, a performance-based health and wellness program designed to promote healthy, active lifestyles and reduce childhood obesity in Salt Lake County. Know Greater Heroes provides essential information about healthy eating, exercise and wellness to children across Salt Lake County through the presentation of interactive assemblies held at local elementary schools. Assemblies prominently feature performances by SLCC varsity athletes as well as nutrition education segments focused on meal planning and consumption of healthy foods that are lacking in children's diets, such as low-fat dairy foods like yogurt. During the 2012-2013 school year, the program will reach more than 30,000 K-6 Salt Lake County students.

"Good nutrition and active lifestyles are essential for keeping today's youth in the best of health," said Cynthia Bioteau, President of Salt Lake Community College. "We extend our thanks to Dannon for better enablingthe College to do our part in promoting healthy living from a young age."

Childhood obesity and associated health issues are a well-documented problem in Utah and across the nation. According to 2010 data from the Utah Department of Health, one in five elementary school students in Utah maintain an unhealthy weight. Dannon's commitment to curbing this epidemic is reflected not only in the programs it supports, but also in the products it sells.

"Both of these organizations are making huge strides toward ensuring our community's children are healthy and able to reach their full potential - Dannon for its nutritious yogurt, corporate generosity and community involvement, and Salt Lake Community College for its civic programs and opportunities presented to the next generation of community leaders," said Utah Senate President Michael Waddoups. "I commend both organizations for their work toward strengthening Salt Lake County and improving the health of its residents."

"For 70 years, Dannon has produced great-tasting yogurts that provide essential nutrients . We encourage people to eat yogurt daily, as part of their three recommended servings of low-fat dairy," said Gayle Binney, Dannon's corporate responsibility manager. "But the company's responsibility doesn't end there. Through SLCC's program, thousands of young children will be taught-in an engaging, interactive way-that good nutrition and physical activity are the keys to growing up healthy and strong."

Dannon established the Dannon Next Generation Nutrition® Grant to promote childhood nutrition education in each of the four communities where a Dannon facility is located. As part of the program, Dannon contributes $30,000 to one non-profit organization in each of four communities ($120,000 in total) - Auglaize, Mercer, Darke, or Shelby County, Ohio; Salt Lake County, Utah; Tarrant County, Texas; and Westchester County, New York - for programs that nurture healthy eating habits among children.

Over the last seven years, programs funded through the Dannon Next Generation Nutrition® Grant have reached more than 1,800 children in Salt Lake County.

Today's event was attended by Utah State Senator Michael Waddoups, West Jordan Mayor Melissa Johnson, Economic Development Corporation Utah President and CEO Jeff Edwards, Salt Lake Valley Health Department Health Promotion Bureau Director Beverly Hyatt Neville, Governor's Office of Economic Development Director of the Outdoor Products Cluster Riley Cutler, Health Reform Implementation Coordinator for the Office of the Governor Dr. Norm Thurston, SLCC Vice President of Government and Community Relations Tim Sheehan, SLCC Vice President of Student Services Deneece Huftalin, SLCC Athletic Director Norma Carr, Dannon Operations Director Doug Young and Dannon Corporate Responsibility Manager Gayle Binney.
