IRVING, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 10/11/12 -- On Oct. 9, 700 employees from Irving-based VHA Inc. and its family of companies, Novation, Provista and Apexus, volunteered at 20 local nonprofit agencies across the Dallas area as part of its 10th annual Community Day. Volunteer projects included planting a school garden with REAL School Gardens at Crockett Elementary School in Grand Prairie, painting and landscaping a park pavilion with Keep Irving Beautiful, sorting produce and meat at the North Texas Food Bank and numerous other activities such as providing skills-based support.
In recognition of VHA's commitment to the local community, Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne declared October 9, 2012 "A day of gratitude and celebration for 10 years of VHA Community Day." Attending the employee banquet, Van Duyne thanked participants for being "exemplary corporate citizens" since selecting Irving-Las Colinas as its headquarters in 1980.
Since its inception, VHA's Community Day has provided nearly 47,000 volunteer hours and donated more than $340,000 to charitable organizations. Created as an alternative to an annual holiday party, Community Day emphasizes the importance VHA places on service as a corporate value.
"As a network supporting not-for-profit hospitals nationwide, VHA knows the impact public service can have at the community level. Community Day is our way of giving back to the communities we call home," said Curt Nonomaque, VHA president and CEO.
"While Community Day focuses on a full day of service, it's also about creating and sustaining long-term partnerships," said Terri Scannell, VHA director of corporate citizenship and sustainability. "We're especially proud that we are able to focus so much of our volunteer efforts locally in the City of Irving. Eighty-seven percent of the 2012 Community Day efforts directly benefit Irving programs."
