Pennsylvania First Lady Susan Corbett Hosts 2nd Annual Arts in the Garden Event

HARRISBURG, Pa., June 10, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania First Lady Susan Corbett today welcomed hundreds of visitors to the Governor's Residence as part of the second annual "Arts in the Garden" open house, which allowed people to tour the home and gardens while enjoying the work of a variety of performing artists.

"I am excited to bring my passion for gardening and the arts together for this event," Mrs. Corbett said. "The governor and I are committed to creating opportunities for visitors to enjoy and appreciate the rich history and beauty of this residence."

"Arts in the Garden" showcased instrumental and dance performances by artists and arts organizations from the mid-state. The family-friendly event had performances and activities for kids, including a community mural that children and their families could paint together.

Participating organizations included the Art Association of Harrisburg; BARAK, Inc.; Catalano Conservatory of Music; Flamenco Tablao, Danzante Urban Arts; Gamut Theatre Popcorn Hat Players; Market Square Concerts; Survival of the Illest; Susquehanna Flute Quartet; Susquehanna Folk Music Society; and the State Museum of Pennsylvania.

Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Dauphin County volunteered their time to offer tips on growing and caring for roses. Visitors also learned how to make products from roses such as potpourri, linen spray and tea.

"Arts in the Garden" kicks off the series of "Second Sunday" events planned through September. Visitors are invited to explore the Governor's Residence gardens from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Each event will highlight a specific theme and feature outdoor, family-friendly activities.
