Make Mom Smile Without Breaking the Bank/ 10 Budget Friendly Mother's Day Gift Ideas

TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/01/13 -- We all want to spoil our Moms. After all, they are the ones that always look out for us. That's why every year Canadians go all out trying to find the perfect gift for Mother's Day.

According to a 2012 BMO consumer survey 73 per cent of us bought Mother's Day gifts, spending an average of 84 dollars each. Yet, ask any Mom you know and she'll tell you it really is the thought that counts - not the price tag.

"Mother's Day has turned into a massive spending spree with children buying their Mom's everything from flowers and candy to spa days and iPads," says Jeffrey Schwartz, executive director of Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada, Inc. "Mother's Day should be about making our Mom's feel special and appreciated, which is why the best gifts come from the heart not the wallet."

Your Mom will appreciate anything you give her on Mother's Day, but for those on a tight budget Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada, Inc., offers these 10 budget friendly ways to make her smile without breaking the bank and accruing more credit card debt:

1. Breakfast in Bed - Let Mom sleep-in and enjoy a lovely, homemade
breakfast in bed. Older kids can take this on themselves, while younger
kids may need some help from Dad.

2. Homemade Bouquet - If your spring bulbs have started to bloom, consider
putting together a homemade bouquet with flowers from your own garden.

3. Pamper Her - A day at the spa can cost a pretty penny, but pampering Mom
with a bubble bath and a do-it-yourself manicure at home can help her
relax and enjoy her special day.

4. One-on-One Time - Plan something special to do with your Mom. You can
watch a movie, go for a walk or even talk over a cup of tea. For younger
families, let kids choose a favorite activity to do one-on-one with mom.
This special time together will mean the world to her.

5. Do the Chores - From laundry, and dishes to vacuuming and grocery
shopping, Moms never seem to stop. Instead of buying something on
impulse, take on her chores for the day and give her some time to
    herself.

6. Wash Her Car - Between soccer practices, music lessons, PTA meetings and
work, few moms give a second thought to how the family vehicle looks.
Washing her car, inside and out, is a great way to show Mom how much you
    appreciate everything she does.

7. A Family Portrait - Look through old albums to find a favorite family
picture. For a few dollars you can have the picture resized and put into
a nice frame, making for a perfectly thoughtful Mother's Day Gift.

8. A Personal Journal - Buy a small journal on sale or at the dollar store.
Write something memorable on the first page to remind your Mom how much
    she means to you.

9. A Homemade Card - Hand the kids a craft bin and let them create their
own Mother's Day cards. The thought and effort that goes into this will
mean so much more than a store bought sentiment. For teen and adult
children, try writing a letter to Mom instead.

10. Make a Donation - Instead of spending money on something she doesn't
need, why not make a donation in your Mom's name to a charity that is
    close to her heart.

May 12th is right around the corner. Instead of emptying your wallet on an impersonal gift, think outside the gift box and give your Mom a gift from the heart. Thirty Frugal Ways to Make Mom Smile is a great resource for more ways to celebrate Mother's Day.
