Igolgi, Inc., a provider of high quality H.264/MPEG4-AVC software solutions, announced its collaboration with Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. on the development of a full Video Codec solution for the Cell Broadband Engine (BE) processor.
Mercury, a leading provider of specialized, high-performance computing solutions, has developed the Mercury Video Codec Library (MVCL) to take full advantage of the computational power provided by the Cell BE processor. The MVCL can be used to accelerate the most time-critical functions found in the video encoding and decoding process, while allowing the flexibility to create custom video codec solutions running on a variety of Cell BE processor-based hardware platforms.
Igolgi is utilizing the MVCL in the development of a high-quality H.264 video encoder solution. The Igolgi Video Encoder solution is a complete High, Main, and Baseline Profile H.264 encoder supporting a wide range of resolutions and bit rates. Next-generation algorithms are a major component of the effort, tuned to the Cell BE processor's vast compute capabilities, to provide a market-leading H.264 encoder solution in terms of compression efficiency, flexibility, and price/performance.
"We are pleased to work with Igolgi on their comprehensive encoder solution," said Mark Skalabrin, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Advanced Computing Solutions at Mercury. "Combining the video compression expertise of Igolgi with Mercury's Cell-based hardware and software design expertise enables a significant advancement in video encoding performance."
"Mercury's strong technical expertise with Cell BE hardware/software platforms has been instrumental in accelerating our development efforts," said John Stewart, CEO of Igolgi. "Working with Mercury has allowed us to develop an H.264 encoder that takes full advantage of the processing power of the Cell while at the same time allowing us to concentrate on the development of advanced algorithms that result in superior quality video."
