SAN FRANCISCO (Thomson Financial) - Spirit AeroSystems Inc. said Wednesday it signed a contract with Airbus to design and produce a major composite fuselage structure for the A350 Xtra Wide-Body, or XWB, program.
Financial terms weren't disclosed.
The Wichita, Kan.-based aerospace company said it will design and manufacture the Section 15 center fuselage frame section, a composite structure that will be about 65-feet long, 20-feet wide and weigh nearly 9,000 pounds.
Spirit Aerosystems said it plans to open a new facility in Lenoir County, N.C., near the city of Kinston, to accommodate the new contract work. The facility will initially employ 500 people, with plans to expand to 1,000, the company said.
Construction on the North Carolina facility will begin later this year, with operations expected to begin in 2010, Spirit said.
The company's stock was up 4.1% at $31.14. Katherine Hunt kh/jw COPYRIGHT Copyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007. All rights reserved.
