As evidenced by its pioneering initiatives through the pan-European licensing body CELAS, EMI Music Publishing is committed to multi-territory licensing solutions. EMI Music Publishing is pleased to announce that it is taking further steps to expand the licensing of its catalogue for digital uses in Europe.
In this regard, EMI Music Publishing is in advanced negotiations with each of SGAE and SACEM in relation to the representation of its digital rights. The world’s leading publisher of popular music expects to conclude deals with the two collecting societies shortly regarding its Anglo-American repertoire and, in the case of SGAE, its Latin American repertoire. Those agreements would function alongside EMI Music Publishing’s long-standing arrangements with CELAS.
EMI Music Publishing welcomes the Joint Statement of the Online Roundtable on “General principles for the online distribution of music.” The Roundtable has affirmed the importance of choice and competition as the drivers of improvements in licensing for users and representation for rights holders. This is a significant step forward in the development of market-based solutions for the licensing of music to the benefit of consumers.
EMI Music Publishing Chairman and CEO Roger Faxon commented: “We’ve had productive sessions with both SACEM and SGAE, and I’m optimistic that we will conclude agreements very soon. The work of CELAS continues to expand the digitalmarket for our talented roster of writers and composers, and I believe that these new deals, together with the work of the Online Roundtable that European Competition Commissioner Kroes has been leading, will help us to take another important step forward in digital licensing in Europe. I’m particularly pleased that the Roundtable has recognised the importance of a global repertoire database as the cornerstone for the development of effective models for the online licensing of music. It is equally heartening that the Roundtable has recognised the urgent need to address piracy.
“I would like to thank Commissioner Kroes for her leadership and to congratulate her and her team on promoting a constructive and productive dialogue among the stakeholders which has today resulted in the issue of the Joint Statement of the Roundtable.”
