Axiom Funds founder eyes future growth opportunities in emerging APAC and LatAm markets
MaxCap Partners (MaxCap), a leading multi-family office and provider of wealth management investment services to the ultra high net worth community, announced today it appointed Mohammad Kamal Syed as CEO in August. MaxCap founder, Michael George, will now concentrate on the company's investment committee, in particular the private equity sector, whilst also having more time to pursue his other business and family interests.
Established in 2006, MaxCap is a privately owned, independent, multi-family office dedicated to tailoring investment portfolios according to the individual needs of its clients, needs which may include business ventures or philanthropic interests. MaxCap offers its clients, which include wealthy entrepreneurs and their families, pension funds and life insurance companies, access to a full spectrum of investments covering all asset classes.
Syed brings an abundance of experience spanning investment banking and the fund management industry and bridges the crucial gap between family wealth management and institutional investment banking. Prior to joining MaxCap as CEO he founded Axiom Funds Group in 2002, one of the first funds of hedge funds to specialise in fixed income relative value and market neutral strategies, as well as launching one of the first commodities and natural resources fund of funds. Syed has merged the Axiom funds with MaxCap and brings part of the team with him. In his earlier career, Syed held senior management positions in some of the top investment banks across Europe and Asia. These included Assistant General Manager at the Bank of Tokyo; Head of Derivatives Trading Asia Pacific and Global Markets, Barclays Capital; and Board Director, COO and Head of Investments and Trading at Sanwa International where he was responsible for building and managing all business activities across the two regions.
Commenting on Syed's appointment, Michael George said, "When I started MaxCap Partners four years ago, it was because my family and I were disappointed to discover that we could not find a private bank or multi-family office with the same calibre of staff you would expect from a hedge fund or private equity firm or with an investment ethos that aligned our interests with their own. I established MaxCap to meet this gap in the market, always with a view to transferring the day to day management of the firm once I was confident that the business was sustainable and scalable. I look forward to continuing my roles on the Advisory Board and investment committee in the knowledge that MaxCap will continue to go from strength to strength under the leadership of Mohammad Kamal Syed, and I welcome him into the team."
On his appointment as CEO, Syed said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead MaxCap Partners through the next phase of its development and evolution. I was attracted to MaxCap because of its independent ethos and investment philosophy which aligned the interests of both the firm and the clients. This was further demonstrated by its excellent track record.
Wealthy families have been poorly served by the private banks whose vested interests superseded their clients. This veil has finally been lifted by the financial crisis. Michael built the partnership on a strong foundation with an enviable model of independence, transparency and alignment with client goals. My role is to build on that foundation, bringing an institutional approach to the business to attract new clients while maintaining our excellent performance. I'll be looking to use my experience and to introduce investment strategies, particularly in the emerging APAC and LatAm markets for the benefit of MaxCap's clients."
