50 billion connected devices by 2020? Is that number too high? Too soon? And just what is the true definition of a connection?
On Wednesday, June 15, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:50 p.m., the 2011 Connected World Conference will gather the four major carriers together to answer that question, and many more. The panel members include Danny Bowman, Sprint; Eddie Meyersick, T-Mobile; Glenn Lurie, AT&T and Janet Schijns, Verizon Wireless.
"The number of connections, and how you count them, is quickly becoming a much-discussed issue. Will we reach 50 billion by 2020? Only time will tell. But, in the meantime, it is hard to ignore the upsurge of connections that seems to be surrounding us," says Mike Carrozzo, chief editor, Connected World magazine.
To appreciate the total number of M2M connections that exist today it's important to separate the M2M data connections from the connected devices. Some that lay claim to having the most connections could be relying on one or two strong consumer products with millions of subscriptions. Others' numbers are backed by a strong list of reputable names at the enterprise level.
There is no debating the way in which AT&T has captured the consumer market, with products from such notable names as Amazon.com, TomTom, Garmin, Sony, and Apple, running on its network.
Not to be ignored is the way in which Verizon Wireless has connected millions of GM OnStar units.
But let's not forget T-Mobile and Sprint—both carriers are showing strength in their own right.
The way in which we count devices today may not be the same way we do so a few years from now. Global considerations, emerging device categories, and spectrum challenges are all obstacles on the road ahead.
"The leading representatives from the M2M network carriers have something to say. They may not agree, but they are all making contributions in some way," says Peggy Smedley, editorial director of Connected World magazine, and president of Specialty Publishing Co. "The real question is who is driving the market forward and who will fall behind in the months ahead."
